Microsoft wins Word stay of execution

Microsoft has successfully managed to overturn the ban on sales of its Word software ahead of the proposed October date.

However, the software giant still needs to convince the courts it hasn’t infringed any patents in using the XML formatting language.

The appeal will be heard later this month after Microsoft asked for the case to be fast tracked to be dealt with quickly, as the potential losses for the company would be huge.

Suspended

However the US courts believe that Microsoft has met the conditions needed to allow the ban to be suspended for now.

The original ruling last month found that Microsoft had wilfully infringed patents filed by i4i over the XML format, and as well as the ban the company was asked to pay Canadian firm i4i $290m (£176m).

“We are happy with the result and look forward to presenting our arguments on the main issues on September 23,” said Kevin Kutz, a Microsoft spokesman, in a statement.

Microsoft cannot sell Word in the US!

File:MS Office 2010logo.svgMicrosoft’s legal batlles never seem to go away and the giant has now been forced to stop selling Microsoft Word in the US and pay a fine of $220 million to a company called i41. Apparently a judge has ruled that Microsoft has knowlinlgey breached an XML patent from 1998 which means that it cannot ship Office 2003 or Office 2007 because they can edit XML-based documents such as .docx files.

Microsoft has said that they are very disappointed with the ruling and they have been given 60 days in which to respond. I personally think that the ruling is unfair after all Microsoft Office 2007, the first edition of Office that supported XML documents was 2007 and that has been around for almost 2 years now so why didn’t this company come forward earlier and secondly what difference would it make if Word could not be shipped? Almost all users have Office 2003 and Office 2007 installed already and you won’t be able to pry Word from their hands.

Microsoft buys Office.com

Microsoft Ofice 2010 Microsoft has finally managed to buy the Office.com domain – as it continues to move towards the release of its next version of the Office software suite.

Although many will be surprised that Microsoft did not already own the Office.com domain, it was in fact owned by a Belgian firm called ContactOffice.

However it has recently emerged that Microsoft has managed to get their hands on the domain. Probably at a considerable cost considering the domain’s traffic rank is 83,793 which means that the domain has serious ad potential

Microsoft has said it will not share what it plans to do with the domain however I am sure that within two weeks we will see a redirect page to the current Microsoft Office home page. Lots of analysts predict that this domain will be the home of the new cloud-based Office which is meant to take on Google Docs and Open Office.

Google Docs Presentation Program Review

Today I decided to check out Google docs in order to get ready to compare it with the cloud version of Office 2010. Today I have decided to focus my attention on the presentation program. My first impression of this cloud Office program, let’s just say I am not impressed. If this was 1995, it would be able to compete with Office and it’s rivals but this is 2009 and I really think that Google has failed. If you need to make a basic presentation with nothing more than a very simple basic presentation that can be easily shared then yes this is for you but if you want to create a presentation with the wow factor that engages and not bores your audience then definitely go for MS Office 2007 or Apple’s Keynote. Anyway you can watch my review below.
