Facebook for Zune HD

Microsoft today has announced the availability of Facebook app for the Zune HD portable media player. Zune HD 4.3 firmware was released in November last year which added support for running 3D games and apps on the Tegra-powered Zune HD. The first batch of these games and apps finally arrived in late November as a free download via the Zune Marketplace followed by the Twitter app in December 2009.

Zune coming to the UK

ZUNE HDMicrosoft has finally announced plans to launch its Zune entertainment brand in the UK and Europe, ramping up its attempts to take a bigger slice of the mobile entertainment pie away from Apple’s dominance of the market with iPod and iPhone.

Zune has been available on PC over in the US for a while now and the service launches on the Xbox 360 here in the UK this week.

Three screens near you

Microsoft’s general manager for TV, video and music marketing, Christine Heckhart, told the FT that the company wants to put Zune on “three screens”, harking back to Bill Gates’ original vision of “Live Anywhere” – essentially a fully integrated entertainment experience you can access on your PC, TV or mobile.

“The strategy and vision of Zune is to continue to build out that full entertainment experience,” she added.

Mark Mulligan, music analyst at Forrester Research, also adds that he considers Microsoft’s latest Zune HD player to be a “killer device”.

No word on when the UK might see Zune HD yet, but it seems that Microsoft UK has it sights firmly fixed on owning the living room with its latest moves to integrate social networking, gaming and movie-viewing via the Xbox 360.

What Microsoft needs to do to make the Zune HD a success

Zune LogoLots of people have never heard of Microsoft’s media player the Zune. Even Microsoft workers in the UK have never heard of it. Microsoft could be bringing the Zune to the UK as they have strated at add Zune software to the Xbox in the UK and they havvn’t said that it will be coming to the UK but they have given some hints that it might. If it is comign they have to reducate a nation that is obsessed with only one music player, the iPod. Almost everyone has got one and at schools it’s not “No MP3 players”, it’s “No iPods”. Microsoft has an epic mountain to climb, if you think the struggle against Google was bad enough getting UK users to dump their iPods for the Zune HD will be very tough. Microsoft must first point out that their device is better than the iPod and not only is it better it looks different, so users will stand out of the crowd. Secondly Microsoft must pull-off a massive PR stunt anf must try and get free advertising on the news by hosting a free concert in two major cities example, but making sure that all peroformers are seen with a Zune HD. The Zune has got a very good brand and people are not likely to really think of it as a Microsoft product so it isn’t going to inherit Microsoft’s brand image.
Microsoft should also think about making having fabric Zune posters hanging from the front of big buildings and major attractions, they did this around the world with Windows 95 and it proved to be an enormous success.
Another idea that Microsoft should think about is giving away free songs for the launch, so you buy your Zune and you get 15 free songs of your choice.

Why the Zune app store WILL be better than the iPhone’s

Although the iPhone app store has 40,000 apps and 1.5 billion downloads I still think that the Zune HD will end up having a better app store than the iPhone. Well after all Microsoft looks after it’s developers very well and there is a lot of support for developers out there. Secondly a Microsoft developer that uses C# can write Windows client applications, Windows Mobile applications, web applications, Xbox and PC games and Zune games and apps. What this means that a developer can take very popular applications and games and with great ease turn them into Zune apps. Secondly you do not need a Mac to do this, you just need a basic PC with some free software to actually make your app. What’s also promising is that because mobile hardware is becoming so advanced and coming up to netbook standards that you might be able to run small original Xbox games on a device such as the Zune. I am quite sure that the Zune will do well, after all iPhones have been out for a couple of years and they are starting to get boring. The Zune has a fresh design, a very good trendy brand and is very powerful not to mention cheaper. All of this could see developers rushing to make the first major killer app.
